Hey everyone! What a year 2021 has been. There's been a lot that's happened this year, and I think now is the perfect time to do a recap!
So, the first thing I'm going to touch on is Periodic. This year I managed to get quite a bit of the framework done, from revamping the save system, adding in code to manage music (this is going to get an update next year), and doing other small functional modifications to make the game work better. I had some hiccups this year for getting the things I wanted to done, but that's how it goes. I've also been working with a close friend to get music done for the game, and it's sounding great. As the game gets closer to launch I'll be linking some of the completed music. As I'm writing this, I'm working on a basic implementation of the loot tables with proper drops per items, and weapon swapping.
I had plans to get a demo of Periodic out this year, but with how busy my day job was (as well as some other life events) that didn't happen. Other things that I had been planning on doing that I didn't accomplish were getting the first two levels complete. This next year should be quite a bit better though.
Other things that I managed to do this year were building my first completely new PC in 10 years. It was the 10 year anniversary of building my first desktop, so it seemed appropriate. Looking at previous posts, it's been roughly 10 months since I complete finished the build, and it's been running like an absolute champ with little to no issues. I'll be doing a post next year when I do some maintenance and maybe upgrade the CPU to a 5000 series Ryzen chip.
One of the last big things I'd like to touch on is some of the books I've read this year. Between the Effective C++ series by Scott Myers, Clean Code by Bob Martin, and most recently The Pragmatic Programmer by Thomas David and Hunt Andrew. All of these books have made a huge difference in my coding processes and how I design or refactor code, and are huge recommendations for any programmer looking for a coding book to read.
I think that about sums up the highlights of my year. I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year's Eve, and more importantly a safe 2022!
I'll catch ya in the next one!
