Hey Everyone!
Thought I'd give an update on a small project I took on over the weekend. Since I'm in the middle of upgrading my desktop (still waiting for a pre-order to ship with the rest of the parts) I figured I'd go ahead and do my server upgrade.
For the upgrade, I'm moving from a dual 12 core Xeon board with 96GB of RAM to my old AMD 1800x desktop, with 32GB of RAM and a 1TB NVME drive for cache. While it's not leaps and bounds better, and I lost 8 cores it's much faster and I can actually use the 10 gigabit talking to the NVME drive.
The upgrade was extremely easy thanks to how UnRaid is setup. All I had to do was remove the drives from the case, unplug everything from the old motherboard, swap the new board in, plug the drives in, and it was as good as new... Until I realized that the Gigabyte X370 Gaming K7 board didn't want to boot headless (without a GPU) and had to go hunt down a slim card to fit.
Once I got my hands on a smaller GPU, I buttoned the case back up, forgot to take a picture, and installed it in the rack. Once the server booted, I ran a parity check after making sure all of my docker containers were set up properly, and it's been running great since!
I'm planning on taking the Xeon computer and making it either a garage computer or a dedicated linux machine. I've also been toying with the idea of building an arcade cabinet with a computer in it, but I don't exactly have a place to put it, so that one might not happen.
Hope you enjoyed this small update!
